Hotels on the Grand Canal Venice 2026: 11 Rated Picks

Updated October 27, 2026

These are 11 well-rated hotels on the Grand Canal in Venice, each with a canal-side address or Grand Canal views named on its Google listing. All score 4.0 or more on Google Maps. They run from the railway station end (Santa Croce and Cannaregio) past the Rialto Bridge to the mouth of the canal by St Mark's. The distance under each name is a straight line to the Rialto Bridge. We do not sell rooms and we list no prices, because they change with every date; the links go to each hotel's own website. If you are still deciding where to stay in Venice, the short answer is this: the station end is easiest with luggage, the Rialto stretch is the most central, and the St Mark's end puts you next to the San Marco sights.

Where to stay in Venice: which stretch of the Grand Canal?

The Grand Canal is one long S-bend, and where you sleep on it changes your trip more than the hotel does.

  • The station end (Santa Croce, Cannaregio) — Hotel Principe, Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal and Canal Grande Hotel are a short walk from Santa Lucia station and Piazzale Roma. You can arrive by train or bus and walk to the door. St Mark's is a water bus ride away.
  • The Rialto stretch (San Polo, San Marco) — Rialto Unique, H10 Palazzo Canova, Hotel Marconi and Antica Locanda Sturion sit within about 200 metres of the bridge. This is the middle of the city: the market, the bridge and the walk to St Mark's all start here.
  • The St Mark's end (San Marco) — Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal and Palazzetto Pisani are closest to the Accademia, the Doge's Palace and the San Marco water bus stops. The furthest from the station.

Is a Grand Canal hotel worth it?

It is if the view is the point of the trip. A Grand Canal address does not mean a Grand Canal room: several Google listings here say only "some" rooms have canal views. Ask for a canal-facing room by name when you book, and get it in writing. The trade-off is the water traffic. The canal is Venice's main street. ACTV's line 1 water bus starts its first run just after 5:00 in the morning, and delivery boats, taxis and gondolas work it all day. Light sleepers may prefer a room at the back, or a hotel one street away from the canal.

How do you get to a Grand Canal hotel with luggage?

From Marco Polo Airport, the Alilaguna Orange line runs down the Grand Canal, stopping at Rialto, Sant'Angelo, Ca' Rezzonico and Santa Maria del Giglio. The fare is €18 with one large bag included. From the railway station, vaporetto line 1 calls at every Grand Canal landing; a 75-minute ticket is €9.50. A water taxi can drop you at the door only if the hotel has its own water entrance, so ask. Step-by-step routes are in our guides from Marco Polo Airport and Santa Lucia station.

Seeing the Grand Canal without paying for the view

If a canal-view room is out of budget, the canal itself is not. Line 1 runs its full length for €9.50. A traghetto, the gondola ferry, crosses it for €2. And a gondola ride costs the same wherever you sleep: €90 for 30 minutes by day, per gondola, set by the city. Compare gondola rides on and off the Grand Canal.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best area to stay in Venice, Italy?

For a first visit, anywhere between the Rialto Bridge and St Mark's Square puts you within walking distance of the main sights. The station end of the Grand Canal is easier if you arrive with heavy bags. Overnight guests also skip the day-tripper access fee, because they pay the hotel's tourist tax.

Do all rooms in Grand Canal hotels have a canal view?

No. Several hotels here describe only some rooms as canal-facing. Book a named canal-view room and confirm it before you pay.

Which Grand Canal hotel is closest to the train station?

On this list, Hotel Principe on the Cannaregio side, and Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal and Canal Grande Hotel across the Scalzi bridge in Santa Croce.

Which Grand Canal hotel is closest to the Rialto Bridge?

Rialto Unique Venice Experience, on the Riva del Ferro about 40 metres from the bridge. H10 Palazzo Canova, Hotel Marconi and Antica Locanda Sturion are on the opposite quay, the Riva del Vin.

Can I take a gondola from my hotel on the Grand Canal?

Gondolas leave from their own stations, not from hotel doors, though many stations are on or near the Grand Canal. Your hotel can tell you the nearest one. The fare is set by the city, €90 for 30 minutes by day per gondola, so see what a gondola ride costs.
