How much is a gondola ride in Venice, per boat and per person?
The official price is for the whole boat. The City of Venice fare page lists €90 for a 30-minute ride by day and €110 for a 35-minute ride from 19:00, and it allows a maximum of five passengers per gondola. So the cost of a gondola ride in Venice per person depends only on how many of you share it. A couple pays €45 each by day, about $50. Four friends pay €22.50 each, about $25. A family of six does not fit in one boat, so it takes two gondolas and two fares: €180 by day, or €30 each. The table on this page sets out the day and evening maths for each group size. The fare is the same at every official gondola station. It was raised on 1 November 2023, from €80 by day and €100 in the evening, prices that had stood since 2006. The rise followed the national ISTAT price index. In 2014 the city had already cut the standard ride from 40 to 30 minutes.
Day vs evening: is the €110 night fare worth it?
The evening fare is €20 more for five extra minutes, and it starts at 19:00 whatever the season. In practice the price you pay depends on the clock, not on the light. In December the sun sets around 16:27, so a ride at 17:00 is already in the dark but still costs €90. In June the sun sets around 21:00, so a sunset ride falls inside the evening band and costs €110. If you want the canals lit up for the lower fare, book a winter ride between dusk and 19:00. If you want golden light on the Grand Canal in summer, budget for the evening rate. Our gondola hours page has the sunset time for every month.
Is there a 2 euro gondola ride in Venice?
Yes, but it is a ferry, not a tour. A traghetto is a working gondola, rowed by two oarsmen, that crosses the Grand Canal at a few points where there is no bridge. Tourists pay €2 a crossing and residents €0.70, according to a Euronews report from August 2025. The crossing takes a few minutes, and passengers traditionally stand. It is the cheapest way to sit (or stand) in a gondola, and it is a real Venetian habit. It is not a ride: you go straight across and get off. Crossings and their hours change, and the San Tomà stop now draws long queues since it appeared in map directions. Read what a traghetto is before you plan around one.
Are there different types of gondolas and gondola rides?
There are three ways to pay for time in a gondola, and they suit different groups. The private ride at a station is the classic one: you walk up to a gondola station, agree the route with the gondolier and pay the official fare for the boat. It is the cheapest option for three to five people. The shared ride sells single seats in a gondola that holds up to five strangers. Booked online, these cost about $35 to $48 per person. For one or two people that can beat €90 for a private boat. For four people it does not. The booked private ride reserves a whole boat at a fixed time and meeting point, paid in advance by card. The cheapest on our tours page cost $156 for up to five people in October 2026, well above the €90 street fare. You pay the extra for certainty, not for a longer ride. The boat itself is the same in all three. The traghetto is a fourth, practical use of the gondola, and other gondola types are rowed in Venice's ceremonial and racing regattas.
What adds to the price of a gondola ride?
Three things change the bill. Longer rides: the city prices any other length in proportion to time, so the gondolier will quote a longer route before you set off. Agree the time and the total first. Music: a serenade, with a singer and accordionist on a nearby boat, is not part of the fare, and no official price is published. Some booked rides add it as an option, as on our serenade ride. Extras: Prosecco, a photographer or a guided walk come only with booked tours. The official fare page does not say how to pay. If you want to pay by card, booking ahead is the reliable route; see whether gondolas are cash only.
Cheap gondola ride in Venice: how to pay less
Fill the boat. Five people at the day fare pay €18 each, about $20, which is less than most shared seats online. Ride before 19:00 to avoid the €20 evening premium. Travel solo or as a pair and a shared ride is the lower price. And if you only want the feeling of a gondola, the €2 traghetto is the cheapest way across the Grand Canal. For the cost of getting around the rest of the city, a 75-minute vaporetto ticket is €9.50 and a 24-hour pass €25, both from the city transport company ACTV; gondola, water taxi or vaporetto compares them.
