The Venice cruise port is no longer one place. In 2021 Italy barred ships over 25,000 tonnes from sailing into the lagoon down the Giudecca canal, past St Mark's. Smaller ships still berth at the Marittima passenger terminal, at the western edge of the historic city. Larger ships were moved to the industrial port of Marghera, to Fusina on the mainland side of the lagoon, or out of the lagoon altogether, with many lines calling at Ravenna, about two hours away by car. So the first question is where your ship docks: check your cruise documents. If it is Marittima, the trip is easy. A three-minute ride on the People Mover (€1.50) takes you to Piazzale Roma, and from there a vaporetto runs down the Grand Canal to St Mark's Square in 30 to 40 minutes. Piazzale Roma is about 1.6 km from the square as the crow flies, so you can also walk it if you travel light. With only a few hours ashore, plan the day around the water, from a shared gondola ride to the walk across San Marco.
Step by step
- 1
Check which terminal your ship uses
Marittima is inside the city's car-and-bus end, by Piazzale Roma. Marghera, Fusina and Ravenna are not, and for those the cruise line's own transfer or excursion is usually the practical way in. Ask the ship what transfer it runs before you go ashore.
- 2
From Marittima, ride the People Mover to Piazzale Roma
The People Mover is a short automated shuttle train with three stops: Tronchetto, Marittima and Piazzale Roma. The ride is 870 metres and takes just over three minutes. A single costs €1.50. It runs 07:00 to 23:00 on weekdays; on Sundays and holidays 08:00 to 22:00 in summer and 08:30 to 21:00 in winter.
- 3
At Piazzale Roma, board vaporetto line 1 or line 2
A 75-minute ACTV ticket is €9.50; a 24-hour pass is €25. Line 2 is quicker, about 30 minutes from the station stop to San Marco Giardinetti. Line 1 stops at every Grand Canal landing and takes about 40 minutes to San Marco Vallaresso. Validate before you board.
- 4
Get off at San Marco and walk to the square
San Marco Vallaresso and San Marco Giardinetti are on the waterfront just west of the Piazzetta. Walk east along the water to reach the Doge's Palace and St Mark's Square.
- 5
Leave enough time to get back on board
Boats run to a timetable, not on demand, and line 2 is shortened on winter late afternoons. Head back to Piazzale Roma well before all-aboard time, and keep the People Mover's closing time in mind.
Tips
- The 2021 limit is the reason most large cruise ships no longer sail past St Mark's. If your ship is big, assume it does not use Marittima until your documents say otherwise.
- From 2 November 2026, line 2 boats from Piazzale Roma end at Rialto between 16:42 and 19:54. Change to line 1 there for St Mark's.
- The Alilaguna Blue line also stops at Tronchetto, one People Mover stop from Marittima, and continues to San Marco Giardinetti. Its tickets are separate from ACTV's.
- A cruise call is a day visit. Check whether the city's access fee applies on your date; in 2026 day visitors paid on 60 set days between April and July.
- With half a day or less, a 30-minute gondola ride costs €90 per gondola by day, shared by everyone in the boat.
Other ways to get there
| Method | Time | Cost | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walk from Piazzale Roma | Longer than the boat; the 1.6 km straight line winds through alleys and over bridges | Free | Signposted for Rialto, then San Marco. Good one way, with the boat back. |
| Alilaguna Blue line from Tronchetto | Check the Alilaguna timetable | Separate Alilaguna ticket | Runs round the outside of the city to San Marco Giardinetti; useful if ACTV boats are full. |
| Water taxi | The quickest boat | Priced per boat; agree it before you board | Best for groups who split the fare, or when time ashore is short. |
| Cruise line shuttle or excursion | Set by the cruise line | Set by the cruise line | The practical choice when the ship berths at Marghera, Fusina or Ravenna. |
Frequently asked questions
Where do cruise ships dock in Venice now?
Since 2021, ships over 25,000 tonnes may not sail into the lagoon down the Giudecca canal. Smaller ships still use the Marittima terminal by Piazzale Roma. Larger ones use Marghera or Fusina, or other ports such as Ravenna. Your cruise documents name the terminal.
How far is Venice cruise port from the city centre?
From Marittima, the People Mover reaches Piazzale Roma in just over three minutes. Piazzale Roma is about 1.6 km from St Mark's Square in a straight line, 30 to 40 minutes by water bus. Ravenna, where many large ships now call, is about two hours away by car.
How much is the People Mover from the cruise terminal?
€1.50 for a single ride. It links Tronchetto, Marittima and Piazzale Roma.
Can I take a gondola ride on a cruise stop?
Yes. The official fare is €90 for 30 minutes by day, per gondola. With limited time, a booked gondola ride with a fixed start time removes the guesswork. See what a gondola ride costs.
