Venice Gondola, Venice: venice access fee 2026: who pays, when and how much

What is the Venice access fee, and who has to pay it?

Updated October 27, 2026

Quick answer

The Venice access fee is a day-trip charge: in 2026 it applied to day-trippers aged 14 and over on 60 set days between 3 April and 26 July, from 08:30 to 16:00. It cost €5 if paid at least four days ahead and €10 after that. Overnight guests, who pay the hotel tourist tax, were exempt, as were residents, students and workers.

The access fee, sometimes called the Venice entry fee, is the city's charge on day visitors at its busiest times. It is paid through the official portal run by the City of Venice. On 27 October 2026, the 2027 calendar and price had not been published, so anyone planning a 2027 trip should check the portal before travelling.

Venice access fee 2026: the dates, hours and prices

Here are the 2026 rules, from the official access fee portal.

  • Who pays — Day-trippers aged 14 and over.
  • When — 60 set days between 3 April and 26 July 2026.
  • Hours — 08:30 to 16:00 on those days. Arrive outside those hours and the fee does not apply.
  • Price — €5 if paid at least four days in advance; €10 if paid later.
  • How — Through the official City of Venice access fee portal.

Who is exempt from the Venice entry fee?

The fee targets day visitors. You do not pay it if you stay overnight in the city, because you already pay the hotel tourist tax through your accommodation. Residents, students and workers are also exempt, and so are children under 14. Exempt visitors may still need to register on the portal, so check your category there before you travel. If you are coming on a day trip, check the calendar for your date: outside the 60 fee days, or outside 08:30 to 16:00, there is nothing to pay.

Do I need a Venice pass?

Not for the access fee: it is a payment for a date, not a sightseeing pass. Other passes are optional. The one most visitors find useful is a public transport pass from ACTV, the water bus company: €25 for 24 hours, €35 for two days, €45 for three days and €65 for seven, against €9.50 for a single 75-minute ticket. Museum and sightseeing passes are sold separately and are worth it only if you plan to use them.

Does the access fee cover a gondola ride?

No. The access fee and a gondola ride are separate. A gondola ride costs the city fare, €90 for 30 minutes by day or €110 for 35 minutes from 19:00, for up to five people, whether or not you paid the access fee. See how much a gondola ride costs. If you are planning a day trip to the lagoon islands rather than the city itself, check on the portal which areas the fee covers; our day trips page covers Murano and Burano.

What about the 2027 access fee?

On 27 October 2026, the City of Venice had not published the 2027 dates or price. If the fee returns, the 2026 pattern of paying ahead to get the lower price is the one to plan around. For a day-by-day plan of the city, see our Venice itinerary and things to do in Venice.
